Vatican recognizes 95 new martyrs of Spanish Civil War

CWN - June 04, 2013

The Vatican has proclaimed 95 more martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. On June 3, with the approval of Pope Francis, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued four separate decrees, recognizing the martyrdom of:
  • Mauro Abel Angelo Palazuelos Maruri and 17 Benedictine companions, who were killed in 1936;
  • Joan of Jesus Vilaregut Ferre and 3 companions, Discalced Carmelites, who were killed along with Father Paul Segala Sole in 1936;
  • Crisanto Casimiro Gonzalez Garcia, Aquilino Baldomer Baro Riera, and Cipriano Jose Julian Iglesias Banuelos; who were killed along with 63 Marist companions and 2 laymen between 1946 and 1939; and
  • Aurelia Clementina Arambarri Fuente and 3 companions of the Servants of Mary, who were killed in 1936.

In other decrees, the Congregation acknowledged the "heroic virtue" of the following, who will now be qualified for beatification if a miracle is attributed to their influence:

  • Joao de Oliveira Matos Ferreira (1879- 1962), a Portuguese bishop;
  • Nicola Mazza (1790- 1865), an Italian priest;
  • Maria Celeste of the Holy Redeemer (1686- 1755), born Giulia Crostarosa, a Redemptorist nun; and
  • Teresa of St. Joseph (1826- 1898), born Teresa Toda Juncosa, a Teresian Carmelite.
